“TotalEnergies’ roadmap is crystal clear: more energy, fewer emissions. To do that, we need to combine our strengths with those that allow us to go faster, higher and… stronger,” quipped Dr. Vincent Saubestre, CEO and President, TotalEnergies Research & Technology USA, with a thinly veiled reference to the Olympic motto Citius, Altius, Fortius. “Cerebras Systems offers one of the most powerful AI accelerators. We are counting on the CS-2 system to boost our multi-energy research and give our research “athletes” an additional competitive edge.”

The CS-2’s leading-edge AI computation, modeling and advanced analytics enable fast and accurate simulations for a wide range of topics tackled by TotalEnergies: from batteries to biofuels to windflow, drilling and CO2 storage.

We are very excited to partner with TotalEnergies and bring our industry-leading AI performance to the multi-energy market,” said Andrew Feldman, CEO and co-founder of Cerebras Systems. “The energy sector has long been at the forefront of using computers to generate insights. AI and the integration of AI into simulation can accelerate TotalEnergies’ mission to provide affordable, cleaner and more reliable access to energy. We are proud to be part of this important endeavor.”

Predictive modeling requires massive computational resources and high-bandwidth data communication. Using traditional general-purpose hardware to do this work typically requires large clusters of GPUs or CPUs and frequent data movement between individual processors. Limited chip-to-chip bandwidth creates a communication bottleneck that slows the modeling workload and delays time to knowledge.

This challenge can be solved with a single Cerebras CS-2 system, the fastest AI computer available. A single CS-2 provides not only cluster-scale computing power, but also communications and storage bandwidth that is orders of magnitude greater than traditional clusters. This results in exceptional performance for workloads such as predictive modeling, which are central to efficient energy development and generation.

In recent work with TotalEnergies, Cerebras has demonstrated a more than 100-fold improvement in a finite difference seismic modeling benchmark compared to traditional architectures. Total and Cerebras engineers wrote the benchmark code using the new Cerebras Software Language (CSL). The CSL is part of the Cerebras SDK, which allows developers to leverage the strengths of the CS-2 system.

With customers and partners in North America, Asia, Europe and the Middle East, Cerebras delivers industry-leading AI solutions to a growing number of customers in the enterprise, military and high performance computing segments, including Argonne National Laboratory and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center, EPCC, Tokyo Electron Devices and GlaxoSmithKline.
