Staff Research Physicist – Computational Science in, NJ for Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL)


PPPL has a research position for young people in the field of computational plasma physics to play a key role in the application and development of the Gkeyll code on astrophysical systems. The successful candidate will develop novel plasma simulation methods based on the discontinuous Galerkin family of algorithms, focusing primarily on application to the plasma astrophysics of black holes, neutron stars and other extreme astrophysical events. The ability to apply the algorithms to fusion and space plasmas is required. A solid background in plasma physics, computational science, and parallel computing is a must. This position is in the newly created Computational Sciences Department, which aims to be a world-class department at the forefront of Computational Plasma Physics.

Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory is a premier fusion energy research laboratory directed by Princeton University for the US Department of Energy’s Office of Science. PPPL is dedicated to developing the scientific and technological knowledge base for fusion energy. The laboratory is advancing fusion energy and plasma physics to develop the scientific understanding and key innovations required to make fusion a source of energy for the world.

The successful applicant will work closely with the Gkeyll team to add new physical skills for modeling the plasma environment around black holes and neutron stars. This includes:

  • Extensive programming in C, CUDA and higher script languages ​​(Python and Lua), optimization on parallel supercomputers, as well as theoretical work in fluid / kinetic description in the presence of strong gravitational fields.
  • Knowledge of general relativity is required.
  • A strong understanding of parallel programming, comfort in dealing with complex C / C ++ code bases and experience with modern software practices are a must.
  • Approximately 75% of the successful candidate’s time is spent developing the formulation and algorithms, and writing code
  • About 25% is used for applications related to specific physical problems.
  • Interest in interdisciplinary applications on space / fusion problems must be present.
  • The successful candidate is expected to supervise PhD students and junior researchers in both code development and physics applications.

Education and experience:

  • Applicants should have a Ph.D. in plasma physics, astrophysics, applied mathematics or a closely related discipline with experience in general relativity and computational plasma physics.

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Knowledge of plasma physics and general relativity at graduate level is required.
  • Experience with advanced numerical algorithms for PDEs, C and C ++ and modern computer tools is a must.
  • English communication and writing skills are required as well as the ability to work in a dynamic and fast-paced team.
