An unidentified Maryland man jumped to his death from a bridge over the Clark Fork River near Superior after colliding with another vehicle on the bridge, and when he saw a semi-trailer slide towards him, he jumped over the bridge railing .
Mineral County’s Undersheriff Wayne Cashman has provided KGVO News with details.
“Yesterday (Monday) around eight o’clock in the morning there was an accident with two vehicles on the bridge just before the Superior exit at about mile Post 47,” said Undersheriff Cashman. “The two vehicles came to a stop in the middle of the bridge. One of the drivers involved got out to check on the driver of the other vehicle and found that everyone was fine at the time. “
Cashman described what happened next.
“He saw a semi-trailer truck slowing down but also sliding and coming towards them,” he said. “We found out later that day that he was out of the area; He comes from the east. When the saddle approached because it was out of its vehicle, it jumped over the bridge’s barrier, not knowing, of course, that it is about 60 to 80 feet to the Clark Fork River. So he dived to avoid being hit by the saddle and was killed by the fall. “
Cashman said staff from the Mineral County and Mineral County Fore sheriff’s offices recovered the man’s body.
“In our office, we are both coroners and law enforcement officers. With the help of Superior Fire and Superior Ambulance, our deputies were able to recover the body, ”he said.
“Cashman said the person was unfamiliar with the area and this may have contributed to the accident.
“Probably (he jumped) to avoid getting hit, but I wouldn’t know,” he said. “I wasn’t there. But I could imagine that there are only two lanes when he is getting out of his vehicle and as narrow as the bridge is. There isn’t much wiggle room. It was Interstate 90 in a westerly direction and it was at Milepost 41, which is the exit directly before the Superior exit. “
The man’s name is withheld until his family can be notified.
