Recently, AWS announced the general availability of Amazon ECS Anywhere, a new feature in Amazon ECS that enables customers to quickly run and manage container-based applications locally, including virtual machines (VMs), bare metal servers, and others managed by the customer Infrastructure.
Since the release of Amazon Elastic Container Service (Amazon ECS) in 2014, the company has offered customers options for performing tasks for the compute services outside of an AWS Region, such as AWS Wavelength and AWS Outposts. However, due to regulatory, latency, and data storage requirements, there is also a need to run workloads on premise. With Amazon ECS Anywhere, customers now have this option. The fully managed container orchestration service enables customers to run Docker container applications on any customer-managed infrastructure in addition to any AWS Regions, AWS Local Zones, and AWS Hybrid infrastructure deployments (e.g., AWS Outposts and AWS Wavelength) and secure. .
In a press release on Amazon ECS Anywhere, Deepak Singh, VP, Compute Services at AWS said:
Customers have told us that while they need to run containers on their own infrastructure, they don’t want to save the hassle of running their own cluster management software. They love the simplicity of Amazon ECS, the fact that it just works, and want the same reliability, scalability, and security of Amazon ECS wherever they run their applications. We pride ourselves on giving our customers exactly what they wanted with Amazon ECS Anywhere – a single plane of service and control to manage their container deployments in AWS Regions, AWS Outposts, AWS Wavelength, AWS Local Zones, and customer infrastructure , both in their data centers and at edge locations. That doesn’t do anything else in the industry.
Customers can create an activation key to register their VMs or bare metal servers. Then install the AWS Systems Manager Agent and the Amazon ECS Anywhere Agent on your local servers, and then deploy and manage your applications using Amazon ECS Anywhere as the control plane for managing the environment.
In an AWS News blog post about the GA version of Amazon ECS Anywhere Channy Yun, AWS Principal Developer Advocate, wrote that the service provides consistent tools and APIs for all container-based applications. In addition, it offers the same Amazon ECS experience for cluster management, workload planning, and monitoring in both the cloud and customer-managed infrastructure. As a result, customers can benefit from reduced cost and complexity by running containerized workloads like edge computing on their own hardware, maintaining latency, and using a single, consistent container orchestrator in the cloud.
In a detailed blog post on Hackernoon, the author Gokul Chandra concluded:
There are other use cases such as cloud bursting, processing workloads at the edge, and containerizing existing on-premises workloads where ECS Anywhere plays a prominent role. Based on the roadmap, ECS Anywhere in combination with other services in the AWS ecosystem will definitely have a significant impact on the hybrid cloud space in the future.

With the Amazon ECS Anywhere GA, you can now take the next level of using existing compute resources in your data center to run managed containers with an orchestrator like Amazon ECS.
Finally, ECS Anywhere can be integrated with various ECS Anywhere partners such as DataDog, Pulumi and HashiCorp to support customers in using ECS Anywhere and to provide additional functions for the function.
